Why Should I Use Puzzle Toys With My Dog?

Posted by Meggan Porter, KPA-CTP CPDT-KA on Fri, Jan 22, 2016 @ 09:01 AM

Feeding time is a very important aspect of training our dogs that we often forget about. In most homes, dinner time is more of a missed training opportunity than anything else. But, let's face it, we don’t all have an hour to dedicate to using every single piece of kibble as a training treat. Especially for those of us who have dogs that are eating 2 or more cups of dog food for every meal. So, how can we take advantage of feeding time for our dogs as a training opportunity, without giving up our whole evening of relaxing?

4 Things All Dog Owners Need To Hear

Posted by Courtney Emken on Tue, Oct 13, 2015 @ 12:10 PM

This story begins like many of my days. I’m standing in the office and a customer comes in to pick up his dog who had been evaluated for the very first time. The dog was...we might call her an old Golden Retriever (breed changed to protect the innocent). She was a beautiful and very friendly older dog. The owner was absolutely enamored by this dog; she was his pride and joy. He wanted to make sure that I knew she was a full-bred dog and that she was very special.

Of course, my business is dogs, so I take people saying this stuff to me with a grain of salt. I am more interested in what I can observe about you and your pet. To me, if an animal is that important to you, then you are mindful of their needs. You don’t have to say a word to me, I can see it in the way you behave together.

Let’s be clear, I don't start lecturing people when they are a brand-new client because I don't want to be like “Hi, nice to meet you! Here’s what you need to change.” Most dog owners don’t even realize what they are doing that we may disagree with, so I consider it an honor to be able to educate them.

In this case, the dog came inside with the customer. She greeted everyone and greeted him a little bit, and the first thing I noticed was that she was obese. Very, very fat. So heavy, in fact that I could not feel her ribs, or any loose skin.  She was just like a little pig about to burst. Get the picture? Here’s what I need you to know:

Staff Pick for May: Brake Fast Bowl for Dogs

Posted by Courtney Emken on Mon, May 19, 2014 @ 08:05 AM

Have you ever scarfed down a meal while you were in a hurry? I have, and my stomach usually doesn’t feel great afterwards. I can only imagine the same is true for my dog. You may have seen it already on our shelf: a bowl with three columns in it. It is not a weird new round Lego; it is a very cleverly designed bowl for the dog that inhales his food.

Avoid Table Scraps in Your Dog's Diet

Posted by Courtney Emken on Thu, Sep 19, 2013 @ 15:09 PM

We have all done it.  Our cute, little furry friend is practically smiling at us from beneath the kitchen table.  The ears are perked and the tail is wagging.  We know what our dog is after.  Just a tiny tidbit from dinner would be delightful, right?  What could it hurt?  It is just a bite or two after all.

DogBoy's Makes the Switch to a New Dog Food: Pulsar

Posted by Courtney Emken on Thu, Apr 18, 2013 @ 16:04 PM

At DogBoy's, we've always been nerds about dog food.  It's no secret.  Before we opened DogBoy's almost 18 years ago, Bart Emken (aka DogBoy) was employed by Tomlinson's, and learned all about quality pet foods and how they affect behavior.  So although the industry standard is to feed whatever is affordable and plentiful (i.e. crappy dog food), we have always fed a higher than normal quality kibble to our boarding dogs, and recommended great foods to our customers as well.  For years, we have fed Natura's California Natural Lamb & Rice.
